It's quite a long time ago that I posted a picture of the art nouveau winter garden (1900) of the school of the Ursulines, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver (between Brussels and Antwerp, Belgium).
This stunning place was the visiting room of the "pensionnat de demoiselles".

New Orleans - Garden District: Commander's Palace

Commander's Palace, a turqoise and white Victorian mansion nestled in the middle of the Garden District at 1403 Washington Avenue, has been a New Orleans culinary institution since 1880. Currently owned by the Brennan family, it has long been recognized as one of the best restaurants in the country and counts celebrity chiefs like Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse among its alumni.

Established in 1880 by Emile Commander, the restaurant initially catered to the "nouveau riche" "American" families that settled in the Garden district away from the Vieux Carré Creole stronghold. He chose the corner of Washington Avenue and Coliseum Street, a site that had been part of the J.F.E. Livaudais Plantation and the faubourg of Lafayette. In 1854 it was engulfed by the city of New Orleans and by 1900 Commander's Palace was attracting gourmets from all over the world.

In the 1920s, under different management, Commander's Palace took on a very different reputation. Riverboat captains would rendezvous with women in the private dining room upstairs while, downstairs, with its separate entrance, remained a respectable family establishment. In 1944, Frank and Elinor Moran bought Commander's Palace, refurbished it and carried on its tradition of excellence with an expanded menu including many recipes still used. When Ella, Dottie, Dick and John Brennan took over pthe restaurant in 1974, they redesigned the interior to complement the outdoor setting. Large windows replaced walls, and custom trellises and paintings were commissioned for each room to complment its particular color and design.

In 2001, a second Commander's Palace restaurant was opened in the Desert Passage mall adjacent to the Aladdin, Las Vegas casino. The original New Orleans location suffered extensive damage due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and after a full renovation, re-opened a year later on October 1, 2006.
