Today's weather: "Don't forget to bundle up and bring as many large refuse bags as you can carry."

At first it was a fun curiosity and a meteorological mystery. The local weather guys were offering team coverage. Everyone was aflutter.

They said most of the stanleys wouldn’t stick and the worst would soon be over. But like so many of the predictions these days, they couldn't have been more wrong. All night long we could hear them gently hitting the roof and sliding off.

When the sun first came up, we could see things were much worse than the early models had suggested. Before the storm was over, we had almost a foot of soggy stanleys on all of the road surfaces, in the rivers, all over the schools and virtually every other structure. It's been a horrible mess that would immobilize the region for days.

Government scientists say though the water cycle may take years to fully recover. THey hasten to add there is no direct evidence this event was influenced by human activity.

That night, it is was difficult to find a copy of Koyaanisqatsi in the movie rental houses …
