A "Stirlling Single" passenger locomotive in the National Railway Museum in York. The Stirlilng Single had one set of driving wheels, 8' 1" (2.46 m) in diameter. The locomotives were designed by Patrick Stirling and built for Great Northern Raiway between 1870 and 1895. The wheel arrangement was 4-2-2 (2 A 1), They were used for express trains between London and York, and also on runs to Scotland. They did not have much acceleration, but could sustain high speeds on level ground. The engine driver did not have much protection from the weather.
