How do you read a atlas map when traveling?

What is the easier way to read the atlas map without getting lost. I have never used a map before I am just curious. I am going out of town this summer and I just want some practice or at least get some ideas on how to read the atlas map as I am driving.

dont read it while driving, only read it when at a complete stop.
Spend and get a garmin hand held gps
