Written in three parts, the first part centres around the child’s first eleven years and, from her point of view, relates childhood impressions set against the backdrop of devastation and deprivation. The second part gives a deep, and at times humorous, insight into the inner conflict of the developing young girl, with all the stirrings and confusions that come in the wake of growing up. The third part takes her into young adulthood in a world seemingly free from the rules and restrictions of a fuddy-duddy but by now blown-apart past, with new temptations on offer and many mistakes to be made. She is finally able to ‘come up for air’ and take a deep breath, deciding that she’ll no longer be a victim but a young woman who knows where she’s going.

Interspersed with historical facts, this is not only a quite delightful and entertaining read but also contains information of value to later generations; an emotive trip down memory lane for those of us who remember; and â€" lest we should forget â€" contains a humbling lesson for all.
